Transformative Learning for 21st Century

By one estimate, 65% of children entering primary school today will ultimately end up working in completely new job types that don’t yet exist
– World Economic Forum

Gone are the days when people learned, mastered academic skills and worked in isolation. To thrive in the 21st century, students need more than traditional academic learning. They must be adept at collaboration, communication and problem-solving, which are some of the skills developed through social and emotional learning. Growing automation means that future jobs will be less routine and will be placing additional premiums on innovation, creativity and imagination – skills that are difficult to automate.

Social and emotional skills development is intended not to supplement but to complement foundational academic skills such as literacy and numeracy, starting at the earliest stages of development and continuing through secondary schooling.

Our inter-disciplinary curriculum and collaborative learning approach embeds the social and emotional skill development from the early years- focused on “competencies and character qualities” (World Economic Forum) that are vital for 21st century learners. Intentional design, co-labouring of group members and meaningful learning are three essential components in our methodology.

We intend to provide a learning environment in which group work focuses not only on mastering academic material but also on how well students collaborate and communicate with one another. They discuss their ideas with peers, exchange different points of view, question others, seek clarification, and participate in higher order thinking such as managing, organizing, critical analysis, problem resolution and deeper understanding and learn increasingly important twenty-first century skills.
